Hancock police chief praises Leadership Washington County

HANCOCK — Being a police chief means more than enforcing the law.

The job also requires one to manage officers and staff and to relate to the people of a community.

Last month, Timothy Buskirk — police chief of Hancock for the past four years — graduated from Leadership Washington County, a program that develops the skills of leaders and potential leaders from across the county.

The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the new Executive Director of Leadership Washington County, Dr. Tara Horst. Dr. Horst served as a board member for over a year before accepting this position. She is also an Assistant Professor at Shippensburg University and contributes actively to the Washington County community.

Hot Topic Day - Tourism

In April, Class XXIII focused on the topic of Tourism in Washington County. During the morning, the class visited the Discovery Station and the Miller House after an informative panel discussion about the major tourism generating events in Washington County. Then, half of the class visited the western part of Washington County and experienced geocaching and visited historic Woodmont. The other group visited the World War II Aviation Museum and the Rider Jet Center at the airport. The class closed out their busy day with a tour of the Hagerstown Suns baseball stadium.

Leadership Washington County Ribbon Cutting

On March 4, 2010, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at the new offices of Leadership Washington County at 38 South Potomac Street, Suite 2, in downtown Hagerstown. Office furniture was generously donated by Susquehanna Bank.

Business and Economic Development Day

The topic of the March day was Business and Economic Development. The class visited Hagerstown Regional Airport and participated in a panel discussion with executives from Sierra Nevada and Rider Jet Center. The class was given an all-access tour of the airport and learned about its economic impact on Washington county. The class visited Washington County Technical High School and learned about the programs the school is offering, and how the curriculum relates to business and economic development. In the afternoon, there was a panel discussion in downtown Hagerstown with several community leaders, in which it was discussed why companies come to the area, why they leave, and how we can keep them here.

Class XXIII Travels to Annapolis

On February 12, Class XXIII travelled to Annapolis for State Government Day. Notable speakers included the members of the Washington County Delegation, lobbyist Ardath Cade, political columnist Barry Rascovar, former Governor Ehrlich, and Governor Martin O'Malley's Chief of Staff, Matt Gallagher.
