Student Leadership Washington County

Helping young people become more engaged, more active, more interested is the goal of Student Leadership Washington County.

To accomplish that goal, Leadership Washington County has partnered with the Student Leadership program the Hagerstown Community College. Dr. Vaughn Crowl, Louise Wine and Mike Harsh have developed the curriculum to help cultivate the leaders of tomorrow. Some three years young, this program has helped to make some really great connections between area youth and our community – students have spearheaded a number of important projects, raising awareness and raising money for such important causes as autism and multiple schlerosis.

Each year, students from the ranks of high school seniors join with a select few college students to go through a nine month leadership program, similar to the Leadership Washington County model. Meeting once a month from September through May, students explore important issues from a vantage point and with community leaders – establishing connections not possible through any other program. The program emphasizes the academic content of the Phi Theta Kappa International Leadership Program and each student receives 2 college credits in Leadership Development upon completion. Two trips are planned including a tour of Washington County and a trip to the State Legislature in Annapolis, hosted by the Washington County Delegation.

The Student Leadership program provides students with a unique opportunity to find their voices, to acquire new skills, new knowledge and to have experiences that will help them be more effective leaders both now and in the future.
